WHY I ALWAYS COME BACK TO LIVED IN BLONDE

I've been colouring my hair since I was 14.

Like a lot of girls, it started with babylights. Then came the brighter appointments, the toner, the face framing pieces, the endless Pinterest boards of blondes that looked effortless but definitely weren't.

Somewhere along the way, my hair became part of my identity. I'd always been blonde, just different versions of it.

Over the past year, though, I started wondering if it was time for a change. The internet was full of rich brunettes and glossy brondes that looked expensive in a way blonde sometimes doesn't. So I finally did it. I went darker.

And I really did love it.

It felt healthier. Shinier. More polished. I understood why so many people never look back once they leave blonde behind.

But after a while, I realised there was something I missed.

I missed the dimension. I missed the softness around my face. I even missed the slightly undone, sun-kissed feeling that only a lived-in blonde seems to have. The darker colour looked beautiful, but it didn't quite feel like me.

The funny thing is, I've had the opposite experience too. I've gone so blonde that it washed me out completely. It looked great in salon lighting, less so six weeks later when the regrowth appeared and suddenly I was back in the chair again.

That's why I always find myself landing in the same place.

Not bright blonde.

Not brunette.

Somewhere in between.

A lived-in blonde has always felt like the best of both worlds. It has enough depth that it grows out beautifully, enough brightness to lift your complexion and enough dimension that it still looks like real hair rather than one solid block of colour. It's lower maintenance, more forgiving and somehow manages to look even better a few weeks after you've left the salon.

I think people forget it's an option.

Hair colour has become strangely black and white. You're either committing to blonde or announcing you're "going brunette." But there are so many shades in between, and sometimes that's exactly where you end up feeling most like yourself.

For me, that's always been a lived-in blonde.

Not because it's trending.

Just because, after years of trying almost everything else, it's the colour I keep coming home to.

With love (and frankness),
